What is Freemasonry?

Freemasonry is one of the world’s largest and oldest non-religious and non-political fraternal and charitable organisations.  It is open to people from all walks of life, regardless of their race, religion, sexual orientation or socio-economic position in society.

It teaches self-knowledge through participation in a progression of ceremonies.

Members are expected to be of high moral standing and are encouraged to speak openly about Freemasonry.

For many, Freemasonry is about making new friends and acquaintances. For others, it’s about being able to help deserving causes and charities. It’s a unique institution with a truly global membership.

Organised Freemasonry, as we know it today, began with the founding of the first Grand Lodge on 24 June 1717 at the Goose and Gridiron Ale House in St Paul’s Churchyard.

It was formed by the agreement of four London Lodges, the oldest of which was thought to have existed in 1691. Evidence of the movement’s existence prior to 1691 is sparse, so the true origins remain a mystery. However, there is general agreement amongst historians and researchers that Freemasonry developed, either directly or indirectly, from the medieval stonemasons – otherwise known as Operative Masons – who built the great cathedrals and castles.

Freemasons have met in Sussex since 1696 and in Horsham since 1825.

Supporting those in need

Sussex Freemasons support those in need in our Sussex communities, from food banks to scout groups, from dementia care to hospice support. We also contribute to wider needs such as national charities of significance to particular Lodges and international disaster and humanitarian relief.

Some questions to consider before going any further…

Are you at least 18 years old?
You have to be at least eighteen years old to join freemasonry.

Do you believe in a supreme being?
You must believe in a supreme being to be a Freemason. We won’t ask about religion, that is personal to you.

Do you have criminal convictions?
To join you must be of good character with no criminal convictions. If you’re not sure what counts and what doesn’t, ask us.

Is your family aware of your interest in Freemasonry and, if so, are they supportive of your intention?

Given your current stage of life and personal circumstances, do you have the time available to commit to joining and becoming an active Freemason?
The Aviation and Combined Services Lodge formally meets six times per year to carry out our Masonic duties (in May, September, October, November, December and March). We also hold informal sessions and rehearsals twice before each formal meeting, together with any number of informal and impromptu social gatherings.

Can you afford it?
Whilst not disproportionately expensive, there is a cost to Freemasonry (Joining fee. regular lodge subscription, dining fee, regalia) and it is important that you factor that into your consideration.

Our Lodge fees are currently £275 per year (full dining), o£165 per year (non dining).
